Introduction to SomaYoga Series (Healthy Back)

This workshop series will focus on developing awareness and voluntary control of your back muscles that help support your core posture. Somatics and therapeutic movements will be offered, as well as classic yoga asana (holding steady positions). The workshop will be an exploration of your relationship to your muscles.

Engage your back muscles in a gentle and safe way. Try movement patterns that help support strength building and develop muscular interoception (sensing and feeling), along with learning anatomy (muscles and bones) which help build your visual cortex and mind-body connection. The more awareness we have to interior muscles, the better we can use them to support and sustain our postural health.

Relieve tightly held muscle tension with this practice! We may explore positions supine (lying on our back) and possible prone (lying on front side). Modifications and props will be provided for access to these movements from all abilities and comfort levels. Common props include chair, blanket, Theraband, and the wall for added support.

SomaYoga is a blend of Somatics and Yoga asana (postures). We may explore common standing yoga postures, but not at a depth that adds unnecessary tension to the body. You will get a better sense of your standing and sitting positions, and learn which muscles to relax and engage, during this class series.
